Patchcords TYPE Y fulfil the following functions in optical networks:

splitting or combining optical signals (especially in CaTV networks) (splitter 1x2 – different ratio available)

creating the protection between the client port of the two transponders (splitter 1x2 – different ratio available)

creating additional optical channel in a single fiber (splitter 1x2 WDM SM 1310/1550; MM 850/1300nm)

bidirectional transmission on single fiber onto one wavelength (optical circulators)

monitoring port for Optical Spectrum Analiser (-20dB)
