CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) allows carrying up to 18 channels into single fiber. ITU-T G.694.2 deifnes a 18 wavelenths grid covering a very wide broadband spectrum from 1270 up to 1610nm. The defined 20nm separation between wavelengths allows simpler optical active and passive (mux, demux, add/drop, etc) components to be used. Using DWDM, up to 80 (and theoretically more) separate wavelengths or channels of data can be multiplexed into a lightstream transmitted on a single optical fiber.
